Many modern CO alarms have modern sensing technology
to ensure safely operation for long periods of time.
Although many manufacturers use various techniques to
interrogate the CO sensor to identify faults, this doesn't test the
inside of the CO alarm, or if it is possible for gas to enter into the
sensor area itself.
It is therefore our recommendation that CO alarms are
tested externally at least once every 6 to 12 months with a suitable
source of carbon monoxide gas.
There are a number of methods available. Some use a
can of carefully measured CO gas whilst others use a slow burning
substance to supply a more general concentration of CO.
